Ukiyo-e refers to pictures depicting the everyday lives of townspeople during the Edo period. The term "ukiyo" was originally a Buddhist term meaning "transient world," "world of suffering," or "impermanent world." During the Edo period, sumo matches ranked alongside pleasure quarters and kabuki as popular entertainment among the townspeople. Sumo, as a unique form of sport, originated in western regions like Osaka and Kyoto in the 17th century.
