Nagoya Castle was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1615 around the ruins of Nagoya Castle built by the Imagawa clan. The Nagoya Castle tower, which has gold Shachihoko on the tower, has the largest floor area in Japan.
When the Tokugawa shogunate collapsed and the Meiji government was established, everything but the castle tower and Honmaru palace was demolished and used as a military facility. On May 14, 1945, the castle tower, Honmaru palace, Tohoku corner tower, and main gate were destroyed by an air raid by the US military. The castle tower was rebuilt in 1959 with a steel-framed reinforced concrete structure, and the Nagoya Castle Honmaru Goten began restoration work in 2009 and was completed in 2018, reaching its current appearance.
